Buy Wine from Kühling Gillot
Kühling-Gillot is a cosy winery settled in Bodenheim, at the Eastern side of Rheinhessen, in the Rheinterrassen area. As the vast majority of German wineries with small production, it has a more than two centuries familiar history on its shoulders. It was not until the early 70's when two families, Kühling and Gillot, joined to create the current winery that is nowadays managed by a woman, according to the tradition, Carolin Spanier-Gillot. Since 2002 Carolin is co-founder of the Young oenologists association ”Message in a bottle” and takes part as well in the “Vinissima” partnership. In the year 2006 she married the also winemaker Oliver Spanier, from Battenfeld-Spanier winery. They both share the respect for traditions inherited and have a strong commitment to highest ecological preservation possible in their vineyards, being parents since 2007 is an additional reason to stick to that.
There are no secrets as far as wine production is concerned in Kühling-Gillot: observation of the traditional standard based in long spontaneous fermentations to embody the terroir concept in the wine. The ageing takes place in stainless steel vats for those wines of early intake and in Stücks for wines produced from Grosse Lage plots.
Their 11 hectares of vineyard have different varieties: Riesling (55%), Spätburgunder (15%), Pinot Gris (13%), Silvaner, Chardonnay and Portugieser (5%) and the remaining 2% with other different grapes such as Gewürztraminer.
Kühling Gillot has its vineyards distributed in different villages and have a good selection of Grosse Lage, such as Burgweb (castle's way) in Bodenheim, particularly interesting thanks to its climate for Spätburgunder cultivation, Rothenbert (red mountain, because of its red clay-slate soils, in the Rothen Hang zone: between Nackenheim and Nierstein) where they have 0.7 hectares purchased in the 90's and it's planted with pre-phyloxera vines, over 80 years old, that create one of the most magnificent landscapes on its slopes that reach 80% gradient, facing east, thus enjoying the morning sun and with the Rhine at its foot. Here the most valued Riesling is obtained, with the utmost deepness and with a core second to no uranium atom: nuclear physics! Pettenthal (where they own 1.5 hectares purchased in 1990) facing east, supplies high voltage wines yet more flowery and airy; Ölbert (olive's mountain) in Nierstein village has soils of mixed red clay, slate, chalk and limestone; finally, further south, in Oppenheim, we find Kreuz (crossroads) and Sackträger, with soils clearly richer in chalk that provide denser and more mature wines.
Their production is wide and a good choice to have a first contact with them is Qvinterra Riesling Trocken: a dry wine (within the Gutswein range or regional wines) whose name comes from Latin (five lands) and is produced with grapes from five different villages. Oppenheim Riesling Trocken is already an Ortswein (or village wine) produced with young Sackträger vines. At the top, we have also the magnificent Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru): Rothenberg GG, Pettenthal GG and Ölberg GG.
The winery is member of the VDP since 1997 and also of Message in a bottle, Pro Riesling and Vinissima. Their annual production is around 70.000 bottles.
Kühling Gillot: if Riesling is the diva variety in Germany, Carolin is Rheinhessen's diva!
