Climatic and geographical characteristics of Campo de Borja
The vineyards that are part of Campo de Borja are located at an altitude that can vary widely, between 350 and 700 meters above sea level. Its soils are composed of nutrient-rich limestone, although they have particular characteristics in each area of the DO.
In the lower zone, with altitudes between 350 and 450 meters, we can find brown limestone soils. This is an area of earlier maturation, where warm, powerful and aromatic wines are produced.
In the middle zone, the highest density of vineyards is concentrated, located between 450 and 550 meters of altitude. These are grouped on the terraces of the river "La Huecha", a tributary of the Ebro. They are gravelly and clay-ferric soils, on a soft relief and with exposure to the sun. The wines from this area are characterized by their intensity, structure and complexity.
The upper zone is made up of vineyards located between 550 and 700 meters above sea level in the upper zones of Ainzón and Fuendejalón, as well as in the municipalities of Tabuenca, El Buste, Vera. Here, subtle and fine wines are produced.
In general terms, the climate is continental with a rainfall that varies between 350 and 450 mm per year. However, the great variety of microclimates means that there is a very wide range of nuances among its wines.
