Buy Wine from Bodegas Ateca
Bodegas Ateca is located in the town of Ateca, just 14 km from Calatayud, in the province of Zaragoza, Spain. This region belongs to the Denominación de Origen Calatayud, one of the most important wine regions of Aragón.
Founded in 2005, Bodegas Ateca was the brainchild of Jorge Ordóñez, a well-known wine entrepreneur who, through his company Oro Wines, sought to produce high quality wines mainly for the US market. In its early days, the winery began as a collaboration with the Gil Family, a group with a long tradition in the wine industry that now runs the winery independently. Australian winemaker Sarah Morris, renowned for her extensive experience in creating "New World" wines, was instrumental in the early years of the project, bringing her modern approach and international vision. Alongside her, winemaker Iwo Jakimowicz also worked in the winery, applying innovative winemaking techniques. Both have worked on important projects both in Australia and Hong Kong dollarpe, establishing themselves as leaders on the international wine scene.
Vineyards
Bodegas Ateca 's vineyards cover some 55 hectares of old vines, mainly of the Garnacha variety, planted on the mountainous slopes of Ateca. These vines grow on slate soils, ideal for producing quality grapes. The terroir of the region is exceptional thanks to the mineral composition of the soil and the extreme conditions that favour the development of the vines.
The climate in the area is continental with extremely hot summers, although temperatures are mitigated by the altitude of the vineyards, which are located between 550 and 800 metres above sea level, on the slopes of the Sierra de la Virgen. This factor is crucial, as it allows the grapes to ripen slowly, preserving their acidity and preventing them from reaching too high sugar levels, which would result in wines with excessive alcohol content. This combination of climatic and geographical factors gives Garnacha grapes the perfect balance between sugar, acidity and tannins, essential elements for making elegant wines with great structure.
Philosophy
At Bodegas Ateca, the philosophy is deeply rooted in respect for the winemaking tradition of the region, combined with modern winemaking techniques that allow us to create wines of high expression. The main focus of the project is to highlight the intrinsic qualities of Garnacha, a variety that in this area expresses itself with great intensity due to the characteristics of the terroir.
The winery uses an artisanal approach to winemaking, paying special attention to the care of the vines and the vinification process. The grapes are harvested by hand, selecting only the best bunches to guarantee the quality of the final product. In addition, the wines undergo a controlled fermentation process in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, which allows the complexity and structure of the wines to develop without losing their freshness.
The leitmotiv of the project is to produce wines that are a true reflection of their environment, maintaining the authenticity and uniqueness of the Garnacha grape from the Calatayud area. This approach translates into the creation of powerful yet balanced wines that clearly express the mineral and fruity character of the terroir.
