Buy Wine from Can Sumoi
Can Sumoi is located in the heart of the Penedès region, specifically in Montmell. This winery has a rich history dating back to 1645. The estate, located 600 metres above sea level, covers 20 hectares of vines over 50 years old and 380 hectares of forest. It also has a main winery and three farmhouses dating back to the end of the 17th century where wine was made.
Pepe Raventós ' passion for the recovery of the landscape and the old high mountain vineyards led him to discover Can Sumoi, an estate that had been abandoned but which impresses with the solitude of the surrounding area and its magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea. In just 6 harvests, they have managed to recover all the abandoned vineyard, plant new vines and help protect the surrounding forest.History
Pepe Raventós comes from a family with a long tradition of making sparkling wines. His family has been growing grapes since 1497 in the Conca del Riu Anoia region. His ancestor, Josep Raventós Fatjó, made the first "traditional method" sparkling wine in Spain in 1872, following the techniques he had learned in Champagne. Pepe's grandfather, Josep Maria Raventósi Blanc, created the DO Cava and was its first president. Today, Raventós i Blanc produces some of the most outstanding sparkling wines in the Penedès.
Philosophy
Can Sumoi focuses on making organic and natural wines with as little intervention as possible in all the viticulture and winemaking processes. Pepe Raventós seeks to recover ancestral winemaking techniques, which means ploughing with mules and horses, having the family live on the estate, raising chickens and rabbits, herds of sheep and goats, and maintaining areas of wild forest. As for winemaking, they seek to recover the old method. In Catalonia and in most parts of northern Spain, people in the mountains used to make wine without intervention in their cellars. Now it's called natural wine and it's very popular, but it started out as agricultural wine. Everything at Can Sumoi is minimal intervention. As for the sparkling wines, Pepe had the idea that a single fermentation allows for purer expressions. The ancestral method is gentler and more in line with this ancient agricultural principle.
As for the grapes, Pepe began to experiment with what he had around him. Although he loves Xarel.lo, in the mountains of Can Sumoi, Xarel.lo cannot grow because of its early budding and if there are early frosts, the whole crop is lost. That is why Montònega (Parellada) and Sumoll, which have later budding, were planted.
