Buy Wine from Escoda Sanahuja
Escoda Sanahuja is a winery that follows the philosophy of respecting the fruit and the environment as much as possible in the winemaking process. Therefore, in addition to applying organic techniques, it ensures that elements such as yeasts are native to the grapes, in order to promote fermentation in a way that allows the fruit to express its original flavour.
The wines from this winery are defined as natural wines from organic farming, as well as guaranteeing the minimum intervention of chemicals, they have no added sulphites.
Let's talk about its history
Escoda-Sanahuja was founded in 1997, thanks to the efforts of Joan Escoda and Mari Carmen Sanahuja, its founders, who, having inherited 2 hectares of land in the village of Montblanc, set about preparing the land to start producing their own wines.
The objective of producing organic wines was clear from the beginning, so they focused on minimising the intervention of the fruit and maintaining the naturalness of the process.
However, it was not until 2003 that the winery began to implement biodynamic cultivation techniques, starting the process by building their own farm to prepare the land according to the guidelines established by this method.
Its creators refer to the wines of this winery as natural, as they consider them to be examples that are one step ahead of biodynamics, since it is not only a label that characterises them, but also a way of letting nature act fully.
Techniques used
At the Escoda Sanahuja winery, the philosophy of making wines using biodynamic techniques and minimal or no chemicals or additives is maintained.
In this way, they ensure that the harvest begins with manual techniques that guarantee the preservation of the fruit and the optimum level of ripeness required for each of their wines.
The yeasts are indigenous to the grape, as they seek to ensure that the fermentation process begins spontaneously and that the wine follows its own course, expressing the naturalness of the grape variety in its flavour and texture.
The ageing process will depend on the grape, however, all of them coincide in being elaborated under a biodynamic technique, without filtrations and without added sulphites.
Vineyards
The vineyards include other types of crops that determine the aromas and flavours of the wines produced here. They also have an orchard and a small farm with hens, chickens and lambs, from which they extract their own compound for the vines, thus avoiding the addition of chemical elements.
The integration of a vegetation cover in these vineyards is fundamental, as it allows the balance of the soil, promoting the presence of humus and micro-organisms that complement the ecosystem. It is also an excellent way of maintaining the humidity in the soil, which is essential in dry climates.
More than biodynamic, natural wines
Escoda Sanahuja is a pioneering winery in the production of 100% natural wines, where its oenologists have not only made an effort to maintain the biodynamic techniques that certify them as such, but have also ensured that the entire process is based on the expression of the fruit and the soil, influenced by the ecosystem that surrounds their vineyards, as they have planned since their creation.
