Buy Wine from Vinos de BenjamÍn Romeo
This winery began in 1995, when Benjamín Romeo, a well-known winemaker and viticulturist, took ownership of a cave more than a hundred years old located on the edge of the castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in La Rioja. It is at that same time that Romeo acquires his first vineyards to carry out his project.
In the 2000s, Bodega Contador became a point of reference when it received the 100 points awarded by The Wine Advocate magazine, by the American wine critic Robert Parker, in two consecutive vintages. This fact would consecrate its reputation worldwide.
The history of the winery
The beginnings of Benjamín Romeo's ambitious project in the world of wine date back to 1996, when he produced the first vintage for La Cueva del Contador. Three years later he produced the first vintage of his flagship wine, Contador. Seeing the good reception of his wines, the famous winemaker decided to dedicate himself fully to the development of his winery.
In 2008 the current headquarters were inaugurated in the same place where the vineyards are located. Architect Héctor Herrera was in charge of the construction. In addition, viticulture enthusiasts can visit the facilities and learn about the origins of the company.
Location of the winery
Bodega Contador is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, at the foot of the castle of the same name . Both the vineyard and the winery are part of the landscape of La Rioja, a place characterized by its clay soils and arid climate, ideal for viticulture.
In total, Benjamín Romeo has a total of more than 50 hectares of vineyards, which in turn are subdivided into approximately 60 plots. In addition, the facilities reproduce part of the terrain with terraces that blend in with the rest of the landscape.
Meet the owner of Benjamín Romeo Wines
Benjamín Romeo comes from a family dedicated to viticulture for several generations. He studied oenology in Madrid and began his career in the wine world in the 1980s as part of the Artadi winery team. He worked there for more than a decade until 2000, when he dedicated himself entirely to his most ambitious project: the creation of Benjamin Romeo Wines.
As a good winegrower, Benjamín Romeo maintains that a good wine begins in the vineyard, so from the beginning of his winery he has opted for a traditional cultivation that respects the land and is based on the lunar cycles in each phase of pruning and harvesting. In addition, Romeo follows a careful process of malolactic fermentation and barrel aging that makes his wines an excellent product.
Currently, in addition to its high-end wines, Benjamín Romeo has marketed a series of products that are more affordable to consumers, such as the varieties Predicados and Qué Bonito Cacareaba. In addition, the winery is open to the public and he is often seen at the bar serving customers as part of the tour.
An organic wine that meets all expectations
The distinctive feature of the wines produced by Romeo is the meticulous work throughout the entire production process. This results in a final product of the highest quality, respectful and completely organic. As if that were not enough, every part of the process is supervised by its owner in order to guarantee a first class result.
