Bodegas Albamar is located in Cambados, a picturesque municipality in the heart of the Salnés Valley in Galicia. This place, renowned for being one of the most outstanding areas for the cultivation of the Albariño grape, has witnessed the growth and evolution of this small family-run winery.
Founded in 2006 by Xurxo Alba, the winery has its roots in a family tradition that dates back generations, when his father, Luis Alba, began planting Albariño vines to make wine in bulk that he sold in the furancho (family tavern) without labelling. The impulse that Xurxo Alba gave to the business after returning from his studies in oenology has been key to Albamar's success. Since then, he has not stopped experimenting and perfecting his technique. Xurxo has worked in other wineries in the region, which has allowed him to absorb knowledge and apply it with a renewed vision. Albamar has become synonymous with fresh, saline and authentic wines, always with the seal of quality that characterises it.
Vineyards
The vineyards of Bodegas Albamar extend over 10 hectares, including own and leased vineyards, located very close to the sea, which gives its wines a marked Atlantic character. The predominant soil is granite and sand, but in certain plots there are clay soils that Xurxo has learned to manage over the years, despite the difficulties of working in an area as rainy as the Galician coast.
The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean has a crucial impact on the region's microclimate. The vines are directly influenced by the sea, which mitigates the effects of high temperatures and provides a perfect environment for the slow ripening of the grapes, preserving the characteristic acidity and freshness of Albariño. This results in wines with a lively acidity and a mineral profile reminiscent of the sea breeze.
In terms of climate, the Salnés region is known for its high rainfall (up to 1,500 mm per year), which requires viticulture adapted to these conditions. Despite the difficulties presented by the high humidity, Albamar wines have managed to stand out for their freshness and their ability to reflect their terroir.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Bodegas Albamar is based on the search for purity and authenticity in each bottle, which implies an approach to viticulture that is as respectful as possible to the environment. Xurxo Alba is a fervent advocate of spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, which allows the wines to genuinely express the character of the terroir.
The vinification process varies according to the wine and the vintage, but in general terms, Xurxo avoids unnecessary intervention. The moderate use of sulphur is one of the most important practices, especially in a region like Galicia, where vine diseases such as mildew are common. However, it always seeks to limit its use to the minimum necessary to guarantee the health of the grapes without compromising the quality of the wine.
Among the most prominent methods, Xurxo uses batonnage (lees stirring) on selected wines to add volume and texture without losing freshness. He has also implemented a policy of not carrying out malolactic fermentation on some of his Albariños, which enhances the natural acidity of the grapes and gives his wines a vibrant and refreshing character.
Xurxo is also committed to making wines with minimal intervention, that is, respecting the grape's natural cycle as much as possible and avoiding any manipulation that could alter its essence. Albamar wines are a clear representation of their environment, and Xurxo seeks to capture that sensation in every sip. "The wine must transmit the landscape where it comes from", says Xurxo, and it is under this premise that he works with each vintage.
The leitmotiv of Bodegas Albamar is the constant search for excellence through simplicity and respect for nature. Xurxo Alba does not seek large productions, but rather to offer wines that speak of their origin. For him, the connection between the vineyard and the wine is essential, and that is why he takes care of every detail in the process, from the manual harvest to the bottling, making sure that each bottle is a faithful expression of his philosophy.
Albamar wines, especially its emblematic Albariño, are fresh wines, with marked acidity and a saline character that makes them unique in the region. This freshness, together with the minerality provided by the granitic soils, is what differentiates Albamar wines from other wineries in the Rías Baixas appellation . Albamar seeks authenticity and biodiversity in each glass, without resorting to invasive techniques that alter the nature of the grape.
