Although at first glance, Franz might look like an advisor to the Styrian Raiffeisenbank, behind his "harmless" appearance hides one of the most daring winegrowers. Since 2003, the couple have been using state-of-the-art biodynamic methods to cultivate their vineyards, seeking "vitality in the wine and the natural diversity of organisms in our vineyards".Vineyards
Strohmeier has 8 hectares of vineyards, where Franz is constantly experimenting to find more natural and better methods. A recent example of his innovation is the use of whey (liquid part of the milk produced in cheese production) to spray his grapes, instead of copper sulphate. Some of his grapes grow wild, without pruning, producing very small, but intensely tasty grapes. Franz's philosophy does not subscribe to any certified biodynamic organisation, although many of his methods are biodynamic. If a disease affects a vine, he often prefers not to treat it, believing that the vineyard as a whole gains in health from a little disease, proving that biodiversity is of paramount importance to him.

Franz makes wines that are unique, a true showcase of the unique terroir of this region. He produces sparkling wines with great finesse and stability, perfect for everyday drinking and for pairing with a wide variety of foods. He also produces the Trauben, Liebe & Zeit (Grapes, Love, Time) line, surprisingly well-made wines without sulphur and made only with grapes, love and time.
Strohmeier's philosophy is based on the promotion of all forms of life, from the smallest single-celled organisms to the most highly developed plants and animals. This holistic system does not distinguish between pests and beneficial organisms. Every creature and every plant communicates something through its appearance, and at Strohmeier they see this message as an aid on their way to understanding nature.
When it comes to winemaking, they harvest their grapes by hand and, in general, the musts ferment spontaneously. Their vineyards are tended exclusively with natural active ingredients such as plant and flower extracts for teas. Some musts are fermented in oak barrels, while others are not. Depending on the cuvée, they are given the fermentation and barrel ageing time they need, and if possible, the Strohmeiers bottle without additional sulphur. Since 2011, they have been replacing sulphur with whey and, to further strengthen the authenticity of their wines.
