Buy Wine from Reyneke
The Reyneke winery is located on the slopes of the Polkadraai Hills in Stellenbosch, a region known for its rich winemaking tradition. The winery has its roots in the 'Uitzicht' estate , which began in 1863. Back then, winemaking was based on the land and nature, without the intervention of chemicals or technological advances. The name 'Uitzicht', which in Dutch means 'View', is a reflection of the estate's panoramic location, which offers views of Stellenbosch and False Bay.
The estate has north, east and south facing slopes, with the best land devoted to vineyards and the rest supplemented by pasture, compost and areas of unspoilt nature.Vineyards
Reyneke's vineyards are free of herbicides, pesticides and fungicides, maintaining an authentic organic tradition. Instead of using chemicals, companion plants are selected and grown between the vines to compete against weeds. These plants have the ability to fix nitrogen from the air, help break up compacted soil and harbour beneficial insects. To combat pests, their natural predators are released, such as ducks, which are particularly fond of snails. In addition, the winery is independently certified, ensuring that they practice what they preach in terms of sustainable agriculture.
Philosophy
Reyneke's philosophy focuses on biodynamic winemaking, where the future lies in the origins. Natural balance is valued more than financial assets, and the biodynamic farm is seen as an "individuality" that must be self-sufficient and self-supporting. This self-sufficiency reduces the carbon footprint and makes the farm less susceptible to market forces. In the winery, the idea is to express the unique characteristics of the terroir in the wines, without adding artificial substances in the winemaking process. A hands-off approach is followed, using only natural solutions to natural challenges.
Reyneke Winery also prides itself on its Cornerstone Project, which sees its workers as the cornerstone of its business. This project focuses on home ownership and education for workers' children, reflecting the winery's commitment to social responsibility.
Reyneke holds organic and biodynamic certifications that attest to its commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. These certifications include Organic EU & NOP, Ecocert and Demeter for crops and wines.
