Buy Wine from Gut Oggau
Gut Oggau is a project located in the small town of Oggau in Burgenland, Austria. It was started by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe in 2007. Before founding the winery, Eduard produced conventional wine with his father in Styria, while Stephanie's family owned and operated the Michelin-starred restaurant Taubenkobel. The couple meticulously restored the 17th century winery that had been abandoned for 20 years, including its 200-year-old screw press.
Fortunately, the vines had been neglected for a period of 20 years, which allowed all pesticide and chemical treatments to be washed away. This allowed them to immediately start working on the vines biodynamically, and they are now fully Demeter certified.Vineyards
The vineyards of Gut Oggau benefit from a period in which they were abandoned, allowing all chemical treatments to be completely eliminated. These vineyards are now farmed biodynamically and are Demeter certified. Most of the vineyards are field blends, meaning that there are several grape varieties planted together in the same vineyard. They work mainly with six main varieties: Blaufrankish, Zweigelt, Grüner Veltliner, Welchriesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Gewurtzraminer.
Philosophy
Gut Oggau focuses on producing wines that reflect the personality and character of the terroir and the vines. From the beginning, they have felt and described their wines as personalities, describing them as loved ones who have touched their hearts. This is why each wine has a name and a face on the label, representing the personal impression each wine leaves on them. The wine family is divided into three generations: the young, the parents and the grandparents. Each generation reflects different characteristics of the terroir and the vines. However, all wines are treated in the same way during the vinification process, without discrimination of colour or style. The result is an authentic and highly individual expression of its soils, climate and vintage.
The Gut Oggau winery sees wine as more than just a beverage. They see it as an opportunity to express their unique soils and origins. Their focus is not simply to produce wine, but to be creators of culture and shapers of cultural landscapes. They aim to work in harmony with nature, caring for and nurturing their soils, plants and animals with great dedication and passion. Each bottle of Gut Oggau is an invitation to share a part of the journey with them, to appreciate the beauty of nature and to connect with the energy and balance that nature offers.
