Description
Gut Oggau Atanasius is an authentic and exciting representation of the Burgenland wine region. Produced from vineyards with an average age of 35 years, this wine reflects the rich tradition and distinctive character of the land from which it originates. The varieties used in its production are Zweigelt and Blaunfrankisch in a vineyard where gravel and limestone soils predominate.
Atanasius, like other wines of the winery, bears a name that reflects a personality or character. Atanasius is described as confident, energetic and direct, with strong roots in the gravel and limestone soil of its homeland. This wine, like others from Gut Oggau, is a representation of the winery's philosophy and approach to winemaking: to create wines that are authentic, expressive and full of character.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand and destemmed before fermentation with indigenous yeasts. This process takes place in used 500 and 1,200 litre oak vats, where the must remains in contact with the skins for approximately three weeks. After this phase, the wine is aged in the same barrels for about 12 months, without batonnage. Finally, it is bottled without fining, filtering or adding sulphur, thus preserving its purest and most natural essence.
Taste
Gut Oggau Atanasius defies traditional expectations of natural wine. Its profile is bold and surprising, with smoky and stony notes reminiscent of Syrah. It is a carbonated wine that retains a residual effervescence, offering fresh and vibrant aromas of strawberries. However, what really sets this wine apart is its distinctive, earthy character. Its boldly funky aroma evokes the smell of cow dung used as fertiliser. In the mouth, it's like biting into a chunk of mineral-rich earth. This wine is not only an experience for the palate, but also invites wine lovers to connect with the earth and nature in a unique and profound way.
