Buy Wine with Silvaner
Silvaner is a natural cross of Savagnin and Österreichisch Weiss from Austria. It has medium ripening with regular returns though its rather early budding makes it susceptible to suffer spring frosts. The small green berries of Silvaner are more aromatic than the wine they produce. It is likely to suffer chlorosis and very prone to downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis cinerea.
In France, Silvaner is grown only in Alsace, where it keeps its acidity compared to Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois. However, the increasing trend is to quit Silvaner as it is a very whimsical variety during all the vegetative cycle.
Germany is, by far, the country with more Silvaner vineyards, located at Franken, Rheinhessen and Pfalz departments. The best Silvaner wines, grown in clay-lime soils, are not particularly fragrant, but tend to be slightly acid, dry, mineral, with body and straight. Some remarkable producers are: Horst Sauer, Hans Wirsching, Fürst, Löwenstein and Juliusspital.
