Airén is a very ancient variety original from Castilla y León region, also known as Manchega. It is very fruitful and produces big clusters with medium-sized berries; it has late budding and ripening. However, it has good endurance to drought and is well acclimated to poor soils. It is also resistant to grape pests and diseases.
Airén variety represents almost the 26% of the total vineyards in Spain, and it is the most planted variety worldwide thanks to its great resistance to drought. However, the latest vineyards removing projects, targeted at reducing the wine surplus in Europe, have resulted in a total cultivated area decrease. The vast majority of Airén vineyards are located in Castilla La Mancha though they can also be found in the autonomous communities of Madrid, Murcia and Andalucía.
Airén variety is chiefly used in the Spanish brandy industry and in older days it was blended with red wine variety Tempranillo to produce light red wines in the appellations Valdepeñas and La Mancha. Airén wines are neutrally white, fresh and dry, with a similar style as Ugni Blanc wines. It is also blended with Macabeo and Malvar. The first white wine with Airén variety was Pesquera, from the acclaimed winery Alejandro Fernández in Ribera del Duero, which is named Alejairén, oak-barrel aged for 24 months and 100% Airén variety.
