Barbera is the most typical and widespread variety in Piedmont. It is also planted in Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna and also in some point of the South of Italy. Barbera is the third red wine variety grape most planted after Sangiovese and Montepulciano.
Barbera is a variety of deep red ruby colour, very fruitful and with a quite late ripening cycle (after Dolcetto but before Nebbiolo), still it keeps a high acidity level, even when it is completely ripen. The best Barbera wine exponents have intense colour, are cool and fairly gentle with a strong cherries taste.
In the heart of Piedmont, Barbera names the following designations of origin: Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC and Barbera di Monferrato DOC. The immediate hills at the north and south of d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, in the DOC d'Alba and in d'Asti province, the area from the Nizza Monferrato northeast towards Vinchio, Castelnuovo Calcea, Agliano, Belveglio and Rocchetta Tanaro are considered the best growing areas for this variety. Thanks to this, Nizza, Tinella and Colli Astiano have been acknowledged as specific subzones for Barbera d'Alba, and Barbera Monferrato Superiore has been awarded with the DOGC status. Asti winemakers argue that Barbera d'Asti can be superior to Barbera d'Alba, whose prices are generally higher because the best vineyards around the Alba city are devoted to Nebbiolo variety (to produce Barolo and Barbaresco) while in the lands near Asti every vineyard is Barbera.
When the vineyards present high performances, Barbera wines can be watery and simple. However, winemakers have considered Barbera variety more seriously in the last twenty years and now a wide range of styles is produced: from cheap young wines, simple, acid and fruity to more expensive wines that are positively influenced by the cask-ageing process.
Some of the best Barbera variety wineries are: Elio Altare, Domenico Clerico, Conterno Fantino, Corregia and Scavino.
