Buy Wine with Semillon Blanc
Sémillon variety is original from Bordeaux, from the municipality of Sauternes to be precise. It has medium ripening, is somewhat vigorous and its performance can be tasty if the grapevine is fertile. It is suitable for stony and clay-limestone soils. Sémillon is susceptible to botrytis cinerea, black rot, mite and leafhopper insects; however it can endure well downy mildew and dead arm (Eutypa lata). Berries are big and golden-yellow coloured when ripe.
Sémillon grapes, as Sauvignon Blanc, have a distinguishable herbal taste just before getting fully mature. When perfectly mature, Sémillon wines have body and are more unctuous than Sauvignon Blanc, with aromas of bee wax, lanoline and lemon.
In France, Sémillon is the fifth white grape variety most planted, concentrated only in the southwest of France. At Bordeaux, Sémillon vines are located at the left bank of Garone River, in Sauternes, producing exquisite sweet white wines of noble rot as for instance Château d'Yquem. They also produce some Sémillon dry white wines together with Sauvignon Blanc at the Graves department, being AOC Pessac-Léognan one of the most noteworthy appellations. Château Haut-Brion Blanc is one of the most exclusives Sémillon white wines.
