Xarel.lo is first mentioned in Sitges, a village in the Penedés region. The name comes from the Italian Word chiarello, which means “claret”, a term used originally to refer to a light coloured red wine.
Xarel.lo clusters are packed and the berries are middle sized and thick skinned. It has also a middle budding and ripening. Xarel.lo vineyard is well adapted to most of the soils, is prone to suffer millerandage and, consequently, is fruitful as long as the flowering climate is good. It is also sensitive to powdery mildew and downy mildew, but resistant to botrytis cinerea.
Xarel.lo variety reaches its highest quality in Cataluña, and its use is absolutely recommendatory for the production of Cava sparkling wines and white wines due to its good ageing as long as the structure, acidity, density and sugar content refers. Xarel.lo together with Parellada and Macabeo stands out in the Penedés appellation, being deeply appraised amongst the Cava producers' thanks to the freshness, body and structure it provides. The best Xarel.lo 100% Cava are: Recaredo Turó d'en Mota and Gramona Celler Batlle.
If we talk about white Xarel.lo wines, sometimes it is blended with other varieties such as Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo and Chardonnay. The single-variety Xarel.lo wines outcome rather scant, aromatically shy, with citric and saline notes and a slight bitter almond and anise taste. The best Xarel.lo producers are: Albet i Noya, Can Ràfols dels Caus, El Cep, Gramona, Nadal, Parató, Torelló, Finca Viladellops and Celler Pardas.
