Buy Wine with Gewürztraminer
Gewürztraminer is a variety of the Traminer family, obtained from an aromatic mutation from Savagnin Rose variety. The designation Gewürztraminer is first sourced to appear in Germany.
Gewürztraminer has an early budding and ripening so it is likely to suffer spring frosts. This is a vigorous variety, not highly productive and prone to millerandage so long pruning is recommended. It is well adapted to clay and limestone soils, though there is some risk of chlorosis and stem dewatering.
There is no doubt that Gewürztraminer is the most worldwide cultivated variety from the Traminer family. Gewürztraminer grapes are unmistakable thanks to its rosy colour and its must has a deep golden copper tone. Gewürztraminer wines tend to be alcoholic compared to the rest of white wines with low acidity, so it is not fitted to warm climates. Malolactic fermentation in cellar is never carried out as the low acidity is a point to be preserved. Also these wines are quite prone to oxidation.
The best wines from this variety are full-bodied, deep golden coloured, with concentrated aromas of lychees and rose petals, where the acidity is present as long as the scents are. In warm regions Gewürztraminer wines turn out to be quite neutral, bland and fat, with a scanty sour taste. After some bottle ageing they can develop an original bacon fat taste. Many times tasters refer to its bouquet as “spiced” as that is the meaning of the word Gewürz, not because of any certain flavour.
In France, Gewürztraminer can be found in Alsace, where this variety accounts for the 20% of the total vineyards. Gewürztraminer wines are distinctly very fragrant, both dry and sweet wines from Vendange Tardive (late-harvest) or Sélection de Grains Nobles (botrytised wines). The best Alsatian wineries are: Paul Blanck, Léon Beyer, Marcel Deiss, Hugel, Josmeyer, André Ostertag, Trimbach, Domaine Weinbach and Zind-Humbrecht.
In Spain, Enate winery in the appellation Somontano, Torres and Gramona wineries in Penedés are the few interesting examples.
