The 2022 Pícaro del Águila Tinto has similar parameters to the 2021 (14% alcohol), but the sensation is of higher ripeness. Surprisingly enough, it has a lower pH than the 2021 I tasted next to it; they used more white to give it freshness and more of the other varieties. It has chalky, dry tannins, reflecting the terroir more, which is remarkable for such a warm and dry year. This is more serious, and the 2021 is more approachable. A triumph over the vintage. 61,757 bottles and 1,979 magnums produced. It was bottled in January 2024.

Fermented with indigenous yeasts with whole clusters in oak barrels. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Bottled unfiltered and unfined.

Description

Pícaro del Águila is a red wine made from Tempranillo grapes, with small contributions of other varieties such as albillo, garnacha or bobal by the Dominio del Águila winery under the Ribera de Duero appellation in the region of Castilla y León.
The grapes used to make this wine have been cultivated under organic principles and come from vines between 35 and 70 years old that grow on red clay soils at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand with a meticulous selection of the bunches. In the winery together without destemming, the bunches of grapes are trodden with the feet and undergo a long maceration and fermentation, respecting ancestral traditions.
After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for approximately 15 months in oak barrels. Finally, it is bottled without filtering or fining.

Taste

Pícaro del Águila is a ripe red wine with fruity and floral aromas accompanied by herbaceous notes. In the mouth it is fresh, deep and elegant. A medium-bodied wine, pleasantly tannic and with a refreshing acidity. The finish is long, persistent and round, a red wine like the Ribera del Duero wines of yesteryear!
