Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The NV Brut Royale Réserve reveals an elegant, floral bouquet with notes of white flowers, spring flowers, ripe orchard fruit and lemon oil. Medium-bodied, ripe, textural and underpinned by a chalky extract, it’s fresh with a mouthwatering finish. A great effort. Based on the 2019 vintage, this is a blend of 67% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay and 2% Pinot Meunier, with a dosage of eight grams per liter.

Description
Philipponnat Royale Réserve Brut is a champagne that encapsulates the essence of the tradition and excellence of the Philipponnat house, founded in 1522. This wine stands out for its balance between structure, freshness and complexity, thanks to its carefully controlled vinification and the exceptional quality of its vineyards. The cuvée is composed of 65% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Meunier, being mostly from the first pressings of Grand and Premier Cru grapes from the Mareuil-sur-Ay area and other prestigious Champagne terroirs.
The calcareous soils of Mareuil-sur-Ay, rich in minerals, offer optimal conditions for Pinot Noir, which is the dominant variety in the blend. This terroir gives the wine its structure and vinosity. In addition, between 20% and 30% of the reserve wines used in the blend are aged in oak barrels using the solera method, which allows for the integration of older wines without losing freshness. Malolactic fermentation is partial, which maintains a perfect balance between acidity and smoothness.
Winemaking
Vinification is carried out using traditional methods to avoid premature oxidation. Some of the reserve wines are aged in barrels, which contributes to the development of complex aromas and adds depth to the wine. The dosage is moderate, at 8 g/litre, thus maintaining a fine line between freshness, fruitiness and vinosity, without masking the wine's character. The wine ages on its lees for three years in Philipponnat's underground cellars at a constant temperature of 12°C, well beyond the legal minimum of 15 months required by the Champagne appellation.
Taste
On the palate, Philipponnat Royale Réserve Brut has a fine, vinous entry, with predominant flavours of red fruits such as redcurrant and raspberry, accompanied by notes of freshly baked bread and biscuit on the long finish. Its texture is generous, balanced and full, with a lively acidity that provides freshness, complemented by an elegant persistence that makes it ideal both as an aperitif and to accompany a wide range of dishes, from white meats to fish and seafood.
This Champagne can be enjoyed now, but will also benefit from several additional years of cellaring, developing further complexity and roundness for at least another five years.
