Description
El Escondite del Ardacho Veriquete is one of the most personal and singular wines of Roberto Oliván, who runs the Tentenublo Wines project in Rioja Alavesa. This wine comes from a vineyard of only 0.4 hectares, composed of vines that are between 50 and 105 years old. The vineyard is located in the village of Viñaspre, in an area of structural replantation on poor marl and sandstone soils, which gives the wine a mineral and structured character. At an altitude of 595 metres, the vineyard is exposed to an Atlantic climate, with abundant rainfall that favours the development of fresh and balanced grapes.
Escondite del Ardacho Veriquete is made from a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, 5% Viura and 5% Malvasía, varieties that bring complexity and freshness to the blend. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected in small boxes to avoid damage.
Winemaking
As for the winemaking process, we opt for a minimum intervention approach, which means that we avoid the use of chemical products and work in a sustainable way in the vineyard. Fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, and 60% of the grapes are partially destemmed, which allows part of the whole cluster to be preserved. During fermentation, gentle punch-downs are applied to encourage a slow and controlled extraction of tannins and aromatic compounds.
The wine is aged for 9 months in second-use French oak barrels, which provides a light structure without dominating the fruit character. No racking is carried out during ageing, and bottling is carried out without fining or filtration, which allows all the natural characteristics of the wine to be maintained.
Taste
El Escondite del Ardacho Veriquete has an elegant and complex nose, with notes of ripe red fruits, wild flowers, and a mineral background reminiscent of damp earth and stone. There are also subtle hints of sweet spices and aromatic herbs, which give it a unique character.
On the palate, the wine is fresh and balanced, with a lively acidity that gives it a great ageing capacity. The tannins are soft and well integrated, contributing to a silky and pleasant texture. As the wine tastes, flavours of red and black fruits such as cherries and blackberries are perceived, along with a delicate touch of flowers such as violets. Subtle notes of chocolate and coffee from the time spent in oak complement the profile without detracting from the fruit.
This wine has a medium-long persistence, and its finish is fresh, with an enveloping sensation that invites you to continue enjoying it. We recommend decanting a few minutes before serving to allow it to express its full potential. Undoubtedly, it is a wine with great elegance and personality, ideal for lovers of modern Rioja wines with character.
