Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Dönnhoff's 2023 Roxheimer Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg Riesling trocken GG is similar to the Höllenpfad 1G but significantly more intense and fascinatingly pure in its concentrated and elegant fruit that intermingles with herbal and almost smoky as well as citric and phenolic notes. It's remarkably complex. Fruit comes from vines more than 50 years old grown in sandstone soils. Dense but juicy and refined in its acidity and salinity, this is an elegant and balanced yet pure, refined and layered Mühlberg Riesling with a playful minerality and serious structure. This full-bodied yet never alcoholic wine develops a long, intense and salivating finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in August and October 2024.

Description
Dönnhoff Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg Riesling GG is an exceptional wine from a two-hectare plot with the oldest vines, over 50 years old. This wine, classified as"Großes Gewächs"(Grand Cru), stands out for its depth and elegance. The Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg vineyard is located in the Nahe wine region in the southwest of Germany. This region is known for its varied soil types and microclimates, allowing the production of wines with a wide range of aromatic and flavour profiles. The Nahe region stretches along the Nahe river, between the Rheinhessen and Rheingau regions to the east, and the Moselle to the northwest. This area is characterised by its geological diversity, which includes slate, quartz and sandstone soils. This variety of soils is ideal for growing Riesling grapes, which is the predominant grape variety in the region.
The climate of the Nahe region is relatively mild, with warm summers and mild winters. The proximity to the Nahe river and the variation in altitude in the area create optimal conditions for viticulture, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and fully. Cool nights and sunny days favour the development of balanced acidity and a wide range of aromas in the wines.
Winemaking
The main grape used is Riesling, and vinification includes fermentation and maturation in large oak barrels for at least 6 months on the full lees, followed by a further 2 months on the fine lees. This process contributes significantly to the longevity and complexity of the wine.
Taste
The taste of Dönnhoff Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg Riesling GG is impressive and complex. It has a deep and subtle bouquet, with ripe fruit and finely crushed mineral notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich and intense, with immense concentration and firm structure. The acidity is saline and ripe, perfectly integrated with the body, fruit and tannins. This wine offers a refined texture and a long, textural finish. Notes of citrus fruits such as grapefruit and tangerine are perceived, along with a touch of spice and a marked minerality. The elegance and complexity of Riesling combine with a vibrant freshness, making this wine an unforgettable experience.
