Description
Comando G La Breña 1er is a singular site wine produced by the renowned Comando G winery, founded in 2008 by Daniel Landi and Fernando García. This project has gained prestige for the recovery of old vineyards in the Sierra de Gredos, in the Cebreros DO, which historically had been forgotten. The wine is made from 100% Garnacha grapes from a specific plot of 0.5 hectares located in Villanueva de Ávila. The vines are between 60 and 70 years old and are cultivated following biodynamic practices. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 1100 metres, which favours a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes, thanks to the temperature difference between day and night. The soils are predominantly sandy, with components of granite and sandstone, which gives a remarkable minerality to the wine.
Winemaking
The Comando G La Breña 1er is made by hand, carefully selecting the grapes at their optimum moment of ripeness. Fermentation is whole-cluster with indigenous yeasts in oak vats, following traditional methods to preserve the identity of the terroir. Maceration is long, extending up to 60 days, which allows for the extraction of fine tannins and complex aromas. Ageing is carried out for 10 months in large 1200 litre French oak foudres, seeking a gentle oxygenation that respects the purity of the fruit. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering, maintaining the most natural approach possible.
Taste
Comando G La Breña 1er presents an aromatic profile marked by the purity of red fruit, with notes of strawberries, cherries and wild flowers such as violets. There are also spicy nuances and a subtle mineral touch reminiscent of wet stone. On the palate, it is balanced and refined, with a silky, well-integrated tannin structure that provides a smooth, enveloping texture. The fresh acidity, characteristic of high-altitude vineyards, gives it a vibrant sensation that lengthens the finish. The minerality is evident, with hints of granite lending depth to the palate. The finish is long, lingering, with a hint of citrus adding freshness and clarity.
This wine is an outstanding example of how Garnacha, when grown and made with care, can achieve levels of elegance and complexity comparable to the great wines of the world.
