Clío 2022
HK$ 528.56
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Clio was produced with 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon that fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in new French and American oak barrels for 23 months. Despite the oak used, the wine is not that oaky; it's spicy and smoky with notes of ripe berries and aromatic herbs. It's full-bodied, with 15% alcohol, a pH of 3.62 and 5.7 grams of acidity, keeping three grams of residual sugar. It's ripe and lush, with abundant, fine-grained tannins. 46,5000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.

Description
In the scorched heart of Jumilla, where the poor, stony soils seem to resist anything but vines, Clio is born. A wine that is not the fruit of chance, but of a shared vision between Jorge Ordóñez and Chris Ringland, one of the most revered names in Australian wine. From the outset, their proposal was almost reckless: to take Monastrell from Jumilla to the top, with a radically modern interpretation, without renouncing the wild intensity of this harsh land.
The old vines, mostly over 60 years old, take root in a landscape of relentless sunshine, severe altitude and scarce rainfall. The vineyard is worked like a secret garden, with yields that are derisory but concentrated to the limit, almost extreme. Here, in this desert of limestone and clay, Monastrell finds its natural place, complemented by a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon (around 30%), which provides structure and tension, like a rope that is stretched to the breaking point.
Bodegas El Nido bet from the beginning on what others considered impossible: to tame the raw power of Jumilla without losing its soul. And Clio is the best proof of this.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, in small boxes, with a rigorous selection in the vineyard and a second selection table in the winery. The grapes are brought in whole, almost like a ceremony, and fermentation is carried out in small stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. But it is in the ageing process that Clio comes into its own: 22 to 26 months in new French and American oak barrels, which provide volume, balsamic and spicy notes, and above all, an enveloping structure.
During this time, the wine is slowly refined, integrating its enormous power with an unexpected elegance. The wine is racked by gravity, without pumps, respecting the integrity of the wine as much as possible
Taste
Clio enters the glass like a nocturnal creature: dense, opaque, almost blackish purple. The nose is a whirlwind of ripe black fruits - prunes, figs, blueberries - wrapped in a layer of liquorice, bitter cocoa, incense and a smoky background reminiscent of Mediterranean undergrowth.
The palate is voluptuous, almost tactile, like thick velvet. The attack is sweet but not cloying, a warm embrace that tightens thanks to the surprisingly lively acidity. Firm, polished tannins that caress rather than tear. The finish is long, lingering, with echoes of vanilla, fine leather, and a faint touch of dried thyme and graphite, taking us back to the landscape of origin.
Clio does not seek to please, it seeks to impress. It is not a wine for every day, it is a declaration of intent. Powerful but precise, intense but refined, a Jumilla that does not apologise for its strength, but transforms it into art.
