Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Edmond 2020

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Compared to other whites, Mellot's 2019 Sancerre Edmond is definitely from another world of thinking and winemaking. The nose indicates a more 'natural' approach since it is more generous in its autumn-like fruit aromas (from dry old vines in fact) as well as more oxidative and phenolic. However, as it takes in more air, the purer and finer the wine becomes. On the palate, this is a pure and finessed as well as rich and intense Sancerre with a very long and complex finish. I wouldn't say this is enormously powerful, but it is pretty powerful and truly intense in all dimensions. The intensity and richness is combined with mineral structure, fine tannins and a sustainability coming from the soils. This wine has enormous energy and is, in the end, a great one and with lots of iodine. 14% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022.

Description
Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Edmond is an exceptional white wine that represents the quintessence of viticulture in Sancerre. This wine is made from Sauvignon Blanc, a grape variety known for its ability to reflect the terroir and for its distinctive aromatic expression. The grapes come from old vines in La Moussière, ranging in age from 40 to 87 years, which gives the wine remarkable complexity and depth.
Winemaking
The winemaking process is meticulous and careful, starting with a manual harvest in small 25 kg crates to ensure the integrity of the fruit. After a rigorous selection, the bunches are transported to the press by means of a belt system, ensuring a delicate pressing. Ageing takes place 60% in new barrels, 20% in one-wine barrels and 20% in two-wine barrels, with a mix of barrel sizes including 228L, 300L and 320L"cigars". The wine matures on fine lees with regular bâtonnages for a period that varies according to the vintage, but is usually 10 to 14 months.
Taste
Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Edmond is a true symphony of sensations. On the nose, it is majestic and powerful, with a richness of both fruity and floral notes. Aromas of honey, vanilla, lemon and brioche stand out, complemented by an elegant touch of new wood. With aeration, it reveals nuances of anise, mint, liquorice and spice, adding a lovely freshness.
On the palate, the wine is generous and robust. The entry is broad and lively, balanced between a rich texture and a pleasant freshness. Flavours of liquorice and anise, lime and vanilla, grey pepper and muscat intertwine in a complex taste experience. The finish is long, spicy and slightly woody, with a distinctive mineral character. With time, expect the wine to further develop its buttery, toasty and vanilla notes, while the mineral profile becomes more prominent.
This wine is a true reflection of the richness and elegance that Sauvignon Blanc can achieve in the Sancerre region, making it an exceptional choice for special occasions and select pairings.
