Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The characterful 2018 Alanda Tinto was produced with a blend of Mencía, Bastardo and Garnacha Tintorera from their vineyards with different soils (slate, sand and clay) in different parts within Monterrei. It fermented together with one-third full clusters in stainless steel and concrete and matured in barrique, stainless steel and concrete vats for 15 months; then it was blended and put back in stainless steel for one more year. It has very good freshness, purity of aroma and flavors and a medium-bodied palate, with moderate alcohol and very fine tannins. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2022.

Features

Description

If you've ever tasted a wine that transports you to another place with just one sip, you know what I'm talking about. Alanda Tinto is exactly that: a piece of Galicia bottled, a pure reflection of its land, its climate and its people. Behind this wine is José Luis Mateo, a winemaker who does not follow trends or seek commercial formulas. His obsession is to express the Monterrei terroir as honestly as possible. And he succeeds.
Alanda Tinto is a blend of native varieties that seem to have been born to complement each other: Mencía, which contributes its freshness and fruity character; Bastardo (also known as Merenzao or Trousseau), with its elegance and finesse; and Garnacha Tintorera, which adds depth and structure.
The vineyards from which these grapes come from are distributed in different areas within Monterrei, on slate, sand and clay soils, each bringing its own personality to the wine. Cultivated organically, without haste or artifice, these vineyards bear witness to patient and meticulous work.

Winemaking

The winemaking of Alanda Tinto follows the same philosophy: minimal intervention to preserve the grape's identity. It is fermented with a third of whole bunches, in stainless steel and cement tanks. It then matures for 15 months in barrels, stainless steel tanks and cement vats. It is then blended and rested for an additional year in stainless steel before bottling in August. No make-up or unnecessary filters, just a wine that breathes authenticity.

Taste

From the very first moment, Alanda Tinto envelops you with its freshness and elegance. On the nose, there are notes of red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, but also a subtle herbal touch, as if you were walking through a Galician forest after the rain.
The palate is vibrant, with lively acidity and fine tannins that caress the palate. It is neither powerful nor overwhelming; it is more like an interesting conversation, the kind that flows effortlessly and leaves you wanting to explore further.
If you like to discover wines with soul, without artifice or excess, Alanda Tinto is for you. A wine that doesn't shout, but stays with you, like a happy memory of a journey you haven't yet made... but that you'll definitely want to make.
