Description
Cantocuerdas Albillo is a palpable example of the renaissance of Madrid whites, revealing one of the best kept secrets of Spanish wines: the Albillo variety. This variety, with a history in the region that could date back to the 8th century, has been the object of Juan Bulnes' passion. Despite having once been appreciated, Albillo, like many other low-yielding, distinctive indigenous varieties around the world, found itself marginalised in favour of more profitable, high-yielding varieties. However, its comeback has been long awaited, especially considering that Albillo played a role in the past, similar to that of Viognier in Côte Rôtie, in the blending of Vega Sicilia Único wine .
Winemaking
This wine demonstrates what can be achieved when Albillo is presented on its own. It comes entirely from three parcels of vines between 85 and 100 years old growing in the granitic sands of the Cantocuerdas vineyard, named after the large granite blocks scattered across the landscape. Each plot is fermented separately and undergoes prolonged maceration (60 days in the case of some of the fermentation vats). The wine then matures in used barrels for nine months.
Taste
Golden yellow in colour, Cantocuerdas Albillo displays very ripe white stone fruit on the nose, accompanied by notes of butter and noble wood. There are also hints of damp grass, white flowers, toast and smoke. On the palate, it is unctuous and dense, with accompanying fruit flavours and a slightly smoky undertone. Its pure, earthy texture may take a while to unfold in the glass, but it's worth the wait.
